Eighth Laws of Cricket

The Eighth Laws of Cricket concern various aspects related to fielders and their actions in the game. Let's explore each aspect along with examples:

Caught

A fielder catches the ball after it has been hit by the batsman, without the ball bouncing on the ground before being caught.

Example: The batsman hits the ball into the air, and a fielder positioned within the playing area catches it before it touches the ground. The batsman is then declared out caught.

Hit the Ball Twice

A fielder can dismiss the batsman if they hit the ball a second time, deliberately, with any part of their body or their bat, other than a hand not holding the bat.

Example: The batsman plays a defensive shot, and the ball lands in front of them. In a bid to prevent the ball from hitting their stumps, they use their bat to deflect it away. However, realizing their mistake, they hit the ball again with their bat, attempting to protect their wicket. The fielding side appeals, and the batsman is given out for hitting the ball twice.

Obstructing the Field

The fielding side can appeal for a dismissal if the batsman obstructs a fielder's attempt to take a catch, field the ball, or run them out.

Example: The batsman, after hitting the ball into the outfield, intentionally blocks the fielder's path to prevent them from reaching the ball. As a result, the fielding side appeals, and the batsman is given out obstructing the field.

Handled the Ball

The fielding side can appeal for a dismissal if the batsman deliberately touches the ball with a hand not holding the bat, without the fielding side's consent, to prevent it from being caught or hitting the stumps.

Example: The batsman, realizing they have played a loose shot, attempts to stop the ball from hitting the stumps by using their hand. However, the fielding side appeals, and the batsman is given out for handling the ball.

Understanding the Eighth Laws of Cricket helps players and officials recognize instances where fielders' actions result in the dismissal of the batsman. Adherence to these regulations ensures fair play and integrity on the cricket field.
